If you want to live in an expensive home in the Washington region surrounded by even more expensive homes, your best best is to move to Great Falls, Va., according to a new list from Forbes.
The list ranked the nation’s 500 most expensive ZIP codes, and Great Falls, ZIP code 22066, is the priciest in the Washington area — and the 239th most expensive in the country, with a median home price of $1,452,769.
Atherton, Calif., ZIP code 94027, topped the list, with homes holding a median value of $10,564,038.
Potomac, Md., ZIP code 20854, was the most expensive ZIP code in Maryland, with a median home price of $1,417,757.
The New York, Boston, San Francisco and Miami areas all had ZIP codes that ranked higher than those in the Washington region.
To compile the “America’s Most Expensive ZIP Codes” list, Forbes looked at the asking price of single-family homes and condos for sale in 28,500 ZIP codes, which it says covers about 95 percent of the U.S. population. It then calculated a median price for the 90-day period ending Oct. 9.

“For each ZIP code, prices are weighted according to the mix of housing stock available in the market. For example, the prices in resort towns where condominiums are common are nudged down, even if single-family homes are priced highly,” the introduction to the rankings reads.
